what’s free, always

the plan itself never goes behind a paywall.

even without a licence, you can write your full plan, view everything, and export a plain text copy. we made this promise for a specific reason: nobody should be locked out of their own funeral plan because a credit card expired. subscription or no, the data on your phone is always yours and always readable.

what the paid plans unlock is the polish: the four keepsake PDFs and the executor bundle, AI-assisted obituary drafting, plan-review suggestions, encrypted backups for handing over to executors, and unlimited photos/video/audio (free is capped at 20 photos, 5 videos, 10 audio — but anything you’ve already added stays, even if you cancel).

common questions

the money questions.

What happens when my year of access runs out?

the yearly plan renews itself each year through the App Store or Google Play, so your paid features just keep working — no lapse, no scramble. don’t want that? cancel any time from your phone’s subscription settings and it simply stops at the end of the period you’ve already paid for. if it does end, your plan, your photos, your letters — everything you’ve already written — stay on your phone, unchanged and still editable, and the free planner keeps working forever. only the paid extras (export, encrypted backup, AI tools, unlimited media) switch off until you renew.

What’s the difference between 1 year and Lifetime?

same features, different commitment. the 1-year plan is a subscription — $40 a year through the store, renewing until you cancel (which you can do any time, in a couple of taps, no guilt-trip screen). lifetime is a single payment: buy it once, never think about it again, no renewals and nothing to cancel — which fits this app’s natural rhythm, since most people open it occasionally, not nightly. if subscriptions make your skin crawl, lifetime is your friend, and it breaks even against the yearly at just under five years.

Is there a free trial?

better than a trial: building your whole plan — writing everything in, viewing it, keeping it on your phone — is always free. you only pay when you want to export it (the PDFs and the executor hand-over bundle), make encrypted backups, use the AI helpers, or add unlimited media. so you can download Good Grief, fill in your entire plan, and only buy when you’re ready to produce something to hand over.

How many devices can I use it on?

as many of your own as you like — your phone, your tablet, a reinstall later. your purchase rides on your own App Store or Google Play account, so a quick “Restore Purchases” brings it back anywhere you’re signed in. and because it’s set up for Family Sharing, you can share it with your household’s family group at no extra cost — the people you’re doing all this for.

Where can I see what data you collect?

briefly: the app stores everything on your phone, and we run no servers of our own. when you unlock the paid features, the purchase is verified through the App Store or Google Play, right on your device — the app never phones home to us. Apple or Google handle the payment; there’s no account to make with us, and we never see your card. we also never see your plan, your photos, your letters, or anything you wrote in the app. our full privacy policy spells it out in detail.

What if I get a new phone, or reinstall the app?

there’s no licence key to lose any more — your purchase lives with your App Store or Google Play account. on a new phone or a fresh install, sign in with the same account, open Good Grief, and tap Restore Purchases; your paid features come straight back. (your plan itself travels via an encrypted backup — the support page walks you through it.)

What if Good Grief shuts down one day?

honest answer: we don’t plan to, but it can happen to any small business. if it ever did, here’s the contract: the app doesn’t depend on us being around — it runs entirely on your phone, so everything you’ve unlocked keeps working, export included. and your plan itself is a plain file on your own phone that you own outright, readable and printable with or without us. worst case, your export and your encrypted backup are yours to keep forever.

How do I cancel or get a refund?

the yearly plan cancels from your phone in a few taps — Settings → your name → Subscriptions on iPhone, or Play Store → Subscriptions on Android. no call, no retention maze, no email to us. lifetime is a one-time purchase, so there’s nothing to cancel at all. refunds go through Apple or Google — they took the payment, so they handle the money, via the “report a problem / request a refund” flow in their store. get stuck? email us and we’ll help you chase it.
