common questions

the things people ask most.

I paid, but the app didn’t unlock.

store purchases can take a minute to go through. first, make sure you’re signed into the same App Store or Google Play account you paid with, then open Good Grief and tap Restore Purchases — that’s the magic button, and it sorts this out most of the time. still locked after a few minutes? email us with the account you used to buy and we’ll fix it.

I forgot my PIN.

the PIN locks the app when you open it, and it’s checked right on your phone — we never see it, so we can’t reset it remotely. If you forget it, the only way back in is to clear the app’s data (or delete and reinstall Good Grief) and start fresh. That’s exactly why the encrypted backup matters: restoring from it is how you get your plan back after a reset, so keep a recent one somewhere safe.

your purchase isn’t affected — after reinstalling, tap Restore Purchases and your paid features come straight back.

I forgot my backup passphrase.

your encrypted .ggb backup uses AES-256-GCM with a key derived from your passphrase by 600,000 rounds of PBKDF2. that’s secure, which means: without the passphrase, the backup cannot be decrypted. Not by us, not by anyone. the plan on your phone is unaffected — open the app, set a new passphrase, and export a fresh backup.

How do I move my plan to a new phone?

two steps — your plan, then your purchase:

  1. your plan travels by encrypted backup. On the old phone, export an encrypted backup and set a passphrase. get that .ggb file onto the new phone — email it to yourself, drop it in your password manager, AirDrop or Nearby Share it, whatever’s easiest. install Good Grief on the new phone, set a fresh PIN, and restore from the backup.
  2. your purchase follows your store account. Sign into the same App Store or Google Play account, open the app, and tap Restore Purchases. there’s no key to copy across.

just need the words, not the photos or audio? you can also export a plain PDF or text copy and keep that anywhere.

How do updates work? Can I get an older version?

updates come straight from the App Store and Google Play — switch on automatic updates and you’ll always have the latest, or update by hand from your store whenever you like. the stores don’t keep older versions around, so there’s nothing to download and no checksums to verify by hand; the store signs and verifies every build for you. source code for each release is published on our public repository.

I have a feature request / I found a bug.

we genuinely want to hear it. email info@goodgrief.rip with as much detail as you can manage. for bugs, what you were doing right before it happened helps a lot.

Are you a death-care professional / funeral home?

we’re not affiliated with any funeral business. the app is built by a small independent team. if you’re a celebrant, funeral director, or end-of-life doula recommending Good Grief to clients, drop us a line — we’d love to know what’s working and what isn’t.
