Terms of Service
These terms govern your use of the Good Grief app for iPhone and Android (the “App”) and the goodgrief.rip website (the “Site”). By using either, you agree to these terms.
This is template language and is not legal advice. If you’re a Good Grief user, treat this as the genuine terms. If you’re another business using this for ideas, please get your own legal review.
1. The licence you get
The free tier of the App is licensed to you for personal, non-commercial use on your own devices. A paid purchase additionally unlocks the features listed at /pricing — exporting your PDFs and executor bundle, encrypted backups, and the AI tools. Your purchase is tied to your own App Store or Google Play account; “Restore Purchases” re-unlocks it on your other devices and after a reinstall, and you’re welcome to share it with your household through the store’s Family Sharing.
You don’t have the right to: redistribute or resell the App, modify it and pass it off as ours, circumvent the store’s purchasing to unlock the paid features, or use the App in ways that would be illegal in your jurisdiction.
2. Your data is yours
You retain all rights to the content you create with the App — your plan, your photos, your letters, your wishes. We do not claim any ownership over any of it. We do not have it.
If you choose to use the optional AI features, the data sent to Anthropic’s Claude API is governed by your acceptance of those terms in the moment of using the feature. See our privacy policy for specifics.
3. Purchases & refunds
The App is free to build your plan in and keep forever. Unlocking the paid features is done through an in-app purchase — Apple or Google is the merchant, and they take the payment. Two options:
One year of access
- An auto-renewing subscription through the App Store or Google Play, at the displayed price.
- It unlocks the paid features and renews yearly so they keep working.
- Cancel any time from your device’s subscription settings; it then stops at the end of the period you’ve already paid for. Apple and Google manage the billing — we never charge your card ourselves.
Lifetime
- A one-time purchase, no expiry, no renewal.
- Includes all current premium features and free upgrades for the foreseeable life of the App.
- “Lifetime” means the operational lifetime of the App. If we discontinue the App entirely, see Section 6.
Refunds
Because Apple and Google take the payment, refunds are requested through them — the App Store and Google Play both have a “report a problem / request a refund” flow, and if you get stuck we’ll gladly help you chase it. We also honour any refund rights mandated by your local consumer protection law (in Australia, that’s the Australian Consumer Law, which we cannot contract out of).
4. Lapse-safety guarantee
We commit, in writing, that:
- Building and saving your plan is free, forever — the editor never goes behind a paywall.
- If your subscription lapses or you cancel, everything you’ve already added stays on your phone, unchanged and still editable.
- You will never be locked out of your own data because of a billing problem.
This holds even if your access lapses or a payment fails. The paid features may stop, but your plan is a plain file on your own phone that you can open, edit, and keep forever.
5. No professional advice
Good Grief is a planning tool. It is not legal, financial, medical, or estate-planning advice. The plan you create with it is not automatically a legally binding will or advance care directive. To make any document legally binding, you need to follow the formal requirements of your jurisdiction — which usually means at least signing in front of witnesses, and in some cases involving a lawyer. We strongly recommend talking to a qualified professional about the legal documents that matter.
6. If we discontinue the App
We don’t plan to. But if it ever happens:
- Existing installs keep working. The App runs entirely on your own device with no servers of ours involved, so what you’ve unlocked keeps working with or without us.
- Your plan, photos, and letters are on your phone and remain fully accessible and exportable as plain text or PDF.
- We will give as much notice as we reasonably can, and the last version you’ve installed keeps working on your phone.
- For Lifetime purchasers, this is the limit of “lifetime” — no refund obligation, but we’ll do what we can (including publishing source where possible) to keep it working.
7. Disclaimer & liability
The App is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we make no warranties — express or implied — beyond those mandated by your local consumer law.
To the maximum extent permitted by law, our total liability to you for any claim arising from your use of the App is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim arose. We are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential losses (such as lost data — though we go to significant lengths to prevent it).
Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts, or modifies any rights or remedies you have under the Australian Consumer Law or other applicable consumer protection legislation that cannot lawfully be excluded.
8. Termination
Your purchases are managed by the App Store and Google Play, so their terms govern chargebacks, refunds, and account issues — a refunded or charged-back purchase is un-entitled by the store, not by us. We don’t run a server that can reach into your phone, so we can’t and won’t remotely disable the App. Whatever happens with a purchase, your access to your own plan data on your phone is never affected — it’s a plain file you own outright.
9. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms occasionally. The date at the top will reflect the most recent version. Material changes will be posted in the App and on this page before they take effect. Continued use after a change means you accept the updated terms.
10. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of [governing jurisdiction — to be confirmed], and you and we submit to the courts of that jurisdiction for any dispute. Nothing here takes away the consumer-law rights you have where you live.
